Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive counselling without a referral from my Doctor?

A referral from your Doctor is only required if you wish to claim a rebate for a portion of your fees from Medicare.

Your General Practitioner or Psychiatrist may place you on a Mental Health Care plan which will then allow you to claim a rebate from Medicare.

To be able to claim for your therapy session, please bring a copy of your doctor’s referral and health care plan to your first appointment with us.

Please note that we are not a bulk-billing practice.  Clients are required to pay our full fee on the day of consultation.

Mental Health Care Plans

Patient MHCP referral letters are valid for 1 year from the date of the referral.

Patients are eligible for up to 10 sessions per calendar year:

  • Patients are eligible for 6 sessions under the initial plan.
  • Patients are subsequently eligible for a further 4 sessions if they require additional treatment within the calendar year.

Am I entitled to a rebate from my Private Health Fund?

Private Health Funds offer rebates for psychological services. You do not need a referral to claim for psychological services through a health fund. Please contact your Health Fund for further details on any rebates and/or limits for your plan.

Medico-Legal Patients

If you are referred by a third party, such as an Insurance company, Work Cover, Solicitor or rehabilitation program, referral information and approval must be obtained prior to making an appointment.

Patient privacy and Confidentiality

Your client file, which includes your personal information and session notes, are kept securely.

Any information disclosed to your psychologist in sessions also remains confidential, unless it is subpoenaed by a court, you give us permission to disclose information, or where our failure to disclose the information would place you or another person at risk.

Medicare Mental Health Care Plans require our psychologists to provide brief reports on your progress to your referring GP throughout your treatment.
